Human Microbiome Project – $1 million toward acne research

November 6th, 2009 admin

Recently, the Human Microbiome Project was given $42 million in stimulus money to conduct in depth research into how microscopic organisms affect our health. Since the microscopic organisms which live in or on our bodies outnumber human cells by about 10 to 1, and are largely unstudied, this could be very interesting. I wrote to Dr. Huang, the University of California San Diego doctor coordinating research on a potential acne vaccine. He is a great guy and spent a long time with me, answering all of my questions. Here’s what I found out: – First of all, before we get excited, a vaccine, should it happen, is still ten years away he says. This is...

Lauric acid – potentially interesting
Dr. Huang, the researcher spearheading the P. acnes toxin vaccine, has also been looking into whether lauric acid might be a natural antibiotic against P. acnes . Lauric acid is the main fatty acid in coconut oil and palm kernel oil, two very common and inexpensive materials. According to Dr. Huang, lauric acid is also an endogenous compound....

Communication gap between teens with acne and their parents
I recently came across an August, 2004 survey sponsored by Galderma Laboratories which presented some interesting findings regarding how parents view their son or daughter’s acne. It turns out their concern does not sometimes translate, and does not always reflect their teenager’s reality. Researchers surveyed 504 teenagers with acne...

Gut/acne connection? Results from my gut bacteria tests are in. The verdict: Negative
I mentioned a while ago about the interesting trial in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology in which they studied people with rosacea . They noticed a high prevalence of intestinal bacteria overgrowth in about half of the rosacea patients and effectively cured most of them by administering a strong intestinal antibiotic called...
Vitamin D
Vitamin D
I have found no conclusive research linking vitamin D with acne, but then again, I have found no research signaling that there is not a link. This is true for, well, most vitamins and minerals. We can only make educated guesses at this point. From a common sense perspective, it is logical to ensure adequate amounts of essential vitamins and minerals....

Alzheimer’s Disease and Brain Changes
When a person has Alzheimer’s disease , physical changes occur in the brain that will affect how the brain functions. CT and PET scan may reveal changes in brain tissue that is caused...
